Yorkshire Children’s Centre (YCC) provides a range of support services for families, young people and older people across Kirklees (and parts of South Yorkshire).

In the UK approximately 1.5 million adults are now affected by loneliness with 1 in 4 adults reporting feeling lonely and isolated, this can lead to  anxiety levels being up to 5 times higher than usual. Recovering from the effects Covid had on our service, is a big challenge and we need your support.

Opportunities Overview

    YCC Community Friend
  • About the Volunteer Role

If you’d like a volunteering role that can really make a difference, YCC Community Friends could be the answer!

For a huge variety of reasons, people can become lonely and isolated, physical and mental health can be hugely restricting factors.

During the last year we more than doubled the number of people we work with, can you help us to keep reaching out? We know that social interactions can help with feelings of loneliness but there are so few opportunities to stay socially active.

If you enjoy chatting, would like to make a difference to a lonely person and can spare about an hour a week – why not become a YCC Community Friends Volunteer? We are a local charity, based in Huddersfield that covers the whole of Kirklees.

    • In short you would visit someone local to you for about an hour a week for a chat. This could involve a walk, sitting or pottering in the garden, a trip to a café or whatever you and your friend would like.
    • We know that this can make a positive impact in alleviating boredom, giving people something to look forward to each week and reducing feelings of loneliness.
    • Once you’ve decided to join us, there is an application form, DBS check and short training session to complete. Then we will find a match local to you.

This is a hugely enjoyable and rewarding role and we’d love you to be part of it!

*As Covid restrictions are starting to lift we are advising our volunteers to meet their friends outside at the moment.

Covid-Safe Volunteering

If you are volunteering in lockdown, please make sure that you are staying safe and are up-to-date with the current rules and guidance.

From 29th March, you should continue to volunteer from home where possible unless you cannot reasonably do so. You can leave home to volunteer if you are not required to isolate for any reason. Please make sure that you are following the guidelines to stay safe.

From 12th April, we move to Step 2 of the Government's lockdown easing roadmap.  This is when charity shops, libraries, and community centres can reopen, and cafes can serve people outside, which will mean that more people will be volunteering outside their homes and we may start to get more new volunteering opportunities.

If you are looking for a volunteering role, please visit our I Want To Volunteer page.
