Volunteer Litter Picker

Keep Hecky Tidy is a  local community group whose aim is to bring a new sense of pride to Heckmondwike by regularly carrying out litter picks, tackling ‘grot spots’ and reporting fly tipping within the town.

The group was established in April 2019, by John and Liz Gautry who got tired of seeing endless rubbish around Heckmondwike town and decided to do something about it.

  • About the Volunteer Role

We are looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in the Heckmondwike area.  Keep Hecky Tidy are keen to bring back a sense of pride in the town and go out regularly to tidy up areas around the town.

We generally have a communal pick on Sunday afternoons targeting areas which have become, as we call them, ‘grot spots’. Litter is picked and disposed of through council channels, with any fly tipping or anti-social behaviour reported.

A litter picker, bag hoop and gloves will be provided for all volunteers attending and instruction will be given. All abilities are catered for and all are welcome.  For those who do not want to venture too far we also support and encourage people to 'adopt' an area near to them and litter pick there - all equipment and support will be provided.

Although we meet every week, volunteers are not expected to attend every meeting therefore this role is very flexible.

Covid-Safe Volunteering

If you are volunteering in lockdown, please make sure that you are staying safe and are up-to-date with the current rules and guidance.

From 29th March, you should continue to volunteer from home where possible unless you cannot reasonably do so. You can leave home to volunteer if you are not required to isolate for any reason. Please make sure that you are following the guidelines to stay safe.

From 12th April, we move to Step 2 of the Government's lockdown easing roadmap.  This is when charity shops, libraries, and community centres can reopen, and cafes can serve people outside, which will mean that more people will be volunteering outside their homes and we may start to get more new volunteering opportunities.

If you are looking for a volunteering role, please visit our I Want To Volunteer page.
